Kate’s

best day

Say bye-bye to the rain as we enter our spring season in Los Angeles.  Now that our 50 degree “cold” weather is over and done with, it’s time to head out for some sunny adventures!  Grab those beach towels, your favorite pair of sandals, and let’s get out and explore all the “City of Angels” has to offer!

Renaissance Faire – Irwindale – @renaissancepleasurefaire

HUZZAH! The Renaissance Pleasure Faire is an awesome way to kickstart your spring!  Come in modern clothes, come in costume, everyone is welcome!  From falcon shows, to Aaron Bonk and his fire whips, to a joust to the death, there is something for everyone to enjoy.  Be sure to bring cash for the beer & mead and the physical activities; archery, ax throwing, ninja stars, and tarot readings. Most of the ground is unpaved – it is the Renaissance Faire after all – so wearing covered shoes is advised. Don your fairy wings and sword, and be sure to bow or curtsy if you see the Queen! Good Morrow until then my lords and ladies, and I’ll see you at the joust!

Jeffrey Deitch Gallery – Hollywood – @jefferydeitchgallery

Jeffrey Deitch is a free gallery located right in the heart of Hollywood that has some of the best mind-bending Modern Art Exhibits around!  With lots of street parking available, this is the perfect way to while away a few hours before stopping by Mother Tongue  for a quick bite to eat!  From large scale light installations to insanely accurate human silicone sculptures, every few months is sure to be a surprise as they turn over their exhibits quarterly.  Currently showing is Alake Shilling: A Bug’s Life from April 22nd- June 3rd.

Rooftop Cinema Club & Cinespia – DTLA & Hollywood – @cinespia

Stay out of the impending summer heat, relax under the stars, and watch your favorite movies!

With locations in DTLA and the Arts District, the Rooftop Cinema Club has set the stage with adirondack chairs for you to watch classic movies on the big screen.  From “American Psycho”, to “Mean Girls”, to “White Chicks”, check their schedule to see your perennial favorite.  At the Rooftop Cinema, snacks are permitted, but not alcohol.

Looking for something with a bit of a spookier vibe?  Cinespia has you covered. Plop down on the soft wet grass of Hollywood Forever or the cozy vibes of Los Angeles State Historic Park. Alcohol and picnic snacks are permitted so enjoy while you watch films such as “Lord of the Rings”, “Mrs. Doubtfire”, and “10 Things I Hate About You!”.   There is no better way to spend your weekend nights than surrounded by your friends at the outdoor cinema!

Palm Springs Hot Rodeo – Palm Springs – @palmspringshotrodeo

One of the leading Gay Rodeos in the US, the Palm Springs Hot Rodeo boasts a mix of traditional rodeo competitions, pool parties, line dances, and STILL finds time to raise money for charity.  Only the LGBTQ+ community could be so fabulous!  The 2023 Community Grand Marshall is Miss Patsi, who has been performing the illusion of Patsy Cline for over 30 years!  Buckle up, Buttercup!  It’s sure to be a rip roaring good time while you crush on a cowboy!

Jazz at LACMA – Mid City – @lacma

Looking for a clever first date or friends night out that doesn’t cost you anything (besides parking)?  LACMA has you covered with their Friday night Jazz at LACMA .  Bring your favorite Trader Joe’s snacks, a bottle of wine, and settle in each week at 6pm. Pro Tip: Get there around 4pm to secure a prime seat.  You can even make a reservation at Ray’s if you want to enjoy dinner and the free show!  Free Jazz at LACMA is a wonderful way to experience some of Los Angeles’s most talented musicians.

Descanso Gardens Walkabout – La Canada Flintridge – @descansogardens

Descanso Gardens is the perfect place to catch LA’s  spring vibes. You’ll find  forest-esque walks, gardens upon gardens of roses, and other blooming flowers for only $15.  There are various programs and events to enjoy, you can even take an enchanted train ride around the park for an extra $5. Descanso is home to lots of wildlife, including deer, mountain lions, snakes, and of course squirrels, so be sure to step cautiously.  Picnicning is not allowed in the garden, but if you are in need of nourishment, check out The Kitchen At Descanso!

Rosenthal Wines & Beach Vibes – Malibu – @rosenthalwines
Located right off the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu is the always delightful Rosenthal Estate Wines.  Reservations are recommended on the weekends, but if you find yourself mid-week needing to catch some shade after laying out on the sand, this is the place.  Food trucks are always around on the weekends with plenty of live music options to jam out to!  Love wine?  They’ve got a fantastic club for you to join if you’re looking to try new varietals or just get their classic cabernet!  Rosenthal is my favorite place to wait out the traffic after a relaxing day on the west side of town.
