Some places truly leave a mark, not just for their incredible food and delicious flavors but also for the memorable dining experience, unique atmosphere, and that magical first bite. In Montreal, these are the top restaurants and hidden culinary gems that made me fall in love with the city’s vibrant food scene. Here’s a quick list of several places I wish I could try again for the first time!

Bagels & Beginnings
St Viateur Bagel – Various Locations
You’ve probably heard of it. And yes—it’s worth the hype. The first time I had one of their warm sesame bagels, fresh from the wood-fired oven, I finally understood the Montreal bagel obsession. Hand-rolled, boiled in honey water, and impossibly satisfying. Grab it on the go, make a sandwich out of it, but you’ll soon be taking a dozen home to make coming home a little easier.

Olive Et Gourmando – Old Town Montreal
Olive Et Gourmando is the kind of café that immediately makes you feel like a regular, even when you’re not. While they keep their menu seasonal, the baked goods bar is always the perfect place to start. Their chocolate chip cookie and morning breakfast bowl somehow made me rethink brunch as a concept. Cozy, busy, effortlessly cool. I walked in curious and left completely won over.

Midday Marvels
Monarque – Old Town Montreal
Two rooms. Two kitchens. Two menus. One fantastic experience. Walking into Monarque feels like entering a very well-dressed secret. It’s upscale without being unapproachable. That first business-lunch-turned-event included trout tartare, wild mushroom gnocchi, and a glass of wine that somehow matched it all perfectly. Elegant, surprising, and simply satisfying.

Maynard – Milton Parc
A vegan burger shack might not sound like much, but Maynard completely rewrote the script. The poutine was rich, crispy, and meat-free magic. Add in a burger or BBQ tofu wrap, and you’ve got a plant-based feast that feels indulgent in all the right ways. Plus, with friendly workers and plants galore, this is the sort of place you’ll find yourself revisiting often.

Arepera – Plateau Mont-Royal
Arepera felt like I had struck gold upon my first visit! It’s laid-back, unpretentious setup creates a welcoming vibe that puts you at ease from the moment you walk in. Located on Prince Arthur in the Plateau Mont-Royal, be sure not to let the casual atmosphere fool you—the flavors here are bold, vibrant, and thoughtfully crafted. The arepas are real showstoppers, striking the perfect balance of texture and taste. It’s a spot where vegans and meat lovers can find common ground, thanks to a creative, 100% gluten-free menu that doesn’t compromise on flavor.

Evenings Worth Repeating
Pub Saint Pierre & Barrelman’s Bar – Old Town Montreal
Two vibes, one building. Downstairs at Pub Saint Pierre is classic bar energy—burgers, good drinks, and of course, hockey on the TV. Upstairs at Barrelman’s, it’s moody lighting and elevated small plates, yet continues to maintain an element of neighborhood vibes. The potato mille-feuille—layers of potato, cheese, honey, and walnuts—was so good it felt like a trick. And don’t forget about their massive salmon tartar, enough for a group of friends, or just your fabulous self to enjoy.

Casavant – Mile Ex
Is my French good enough to understand the menu? Not even close, but the staff helped me feel completely at ease even though the a language barrier. What followed was one of the most memorable meals of my life. Thoughtful food, exceptional wine, and a space that felt quietly special. It’s the kind of spot that feels like it belongs to the neighborhood, but lets you in on the secret.

Magpie Magique – Mont Royal
A little dark, a little mysterious, and packed with personality, Magpie Magique is the equivalent of a dark, mysterious stranger in the corner. The small menu is full of surprises, so don’t skip the roasted eggplant dish. Each cocktail is prepped to perfection, with just enough edge. Let your tempestuous side take over as you indulge in something new and fresh.

Atwater Cocktail Club – Marché Atwater
You had me at the number four bar in Canada. Hidden behind an unmarked door in an alleyway, every cocktail has a clever name, a surprising presentation, or a completely unexpected flavor profile. The food is classic and pairs well with the intensity of the bar menu. This place continues to have the ever-present eternal vibe of being the cool kid who welcomes you to the popular table.
